Home again

March 27, 2008

I have been somewhat of an absent blogger. There has been a lot happening since my last post. David and I spent 10 days in Houston visiting family, his brother and his family live there. We went to the Rodeo, which was fun. The alpaca fleece and halter show was there on the days we were in town. The rodeo actually takes place at night, bull riding, steer roping …. you get the idea. My favorite is the barrel racing. Those women can ride!

While we were in Texas we toured wineries in the Hill Country. What a beautiful part of Texas! We spent a day in San Antonio and would have liked to have stayed longer but it was spring break so there were no hotel rooms available. I am sure on one of our next trips, San Antonio will be on the agenda again. We had a great time on the river walk, even took one of the tour boat rides. I am envious of those of you around the country that can look out and see this in March:

I am not sure I will ever see this kind of color in my yard again. (They are predicting 4-6 inches of snow tonight :(   ).

I have been working on my Montego Bay Scarf , but not much more. I carried it with me to Texas and knit a lot on the plane and in the car. Since we have been home, I have not knit on it at all. Too much to do. I’ll get some pictures to post soon.

I want to share a birth story with you:

A. arrived at around 8 am. It was her second baby and she had been up a good part of the night. She looked pretty comfortable but when I checked her she was 4-5 cms. Her bag of water was intact. She was admitted and got up to walk the halls. She continued to be pretty comfortable until about 11:00 when she asked me to check her. She was 7 cms at that time and decided to get into the tub. She was only in the tub about 30-40 minutes when she wanted to get out. As she walked back to her room, she told be she was going to stop in the bathroom. I stopped at the family kitchen to get a cup of water and when I walked into her room she was sitting on the toilet in the bathroom and told me she was trying to have a bowel movement (a good sign she needs to push). I went over to check to see if the bed and my equipment was ready, that there were gloves out for me. I heard her tell the nurse the baby was coming. She walked to the bed with her hand on her crotch telling me the baby was right there. When she lay on the bed I saw that the baby was right there. With the next contraction, the bag of water bulged out of her vagina with the head not far behind. I broke the water and with the following contraction her baby girl, Grace, was born.  It was such a beautiful and effortless birth.

I get up everyday hoping to witness an event like that. It is such a fulfilling and satisfying part of my life.

Here is a great picture from the Houston Rodeo:

This little cowboy had just had his boots shined and was waiting for his dad, on the stand to his left. If you can see, he is clutching a cell phone in his right hand, he nearly dropped it a couple of time but made a good recovery.

I have a lot going on so will try to blog a little more frequently. But this is all for now.
